The Commonwealth Games that took place in Cardiff
in 1958 were very neatly and professionally documented by British Pathé.
Pathé News The world's finest news
and entertainment video film archive was a producer of newsreels, cinemagazines,
and documentaries from 1910 until 1970 in the United Kingdom.
The minute 58 seconds length , black and
white piece videotaped the entire sports festival in two reels.
The Photography credits to Bill Jordan,
Editor-Cliff Boot, Sound-George Newberry, Writer-
Chris Brasher, Music-Humphrey Searle. Producer-Donald
Taylor. Director-Eric Fullilove.
The
Commonwealth Games, including the opening and closing ceremonies, were held at
the Cardiff Arms Park from
18–26 July 1958.
Thirty-five
nations sent a total of 1,130 athletes and 228 officials to the Cardiff Games
and 23 countries and dependencies won medals.
It was during these games that India won its first medal in athletics .1958 was the
fourth time India participated
in Commonwealth Games.
India won its first gold medal in
these games.
The legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh won gold in
the men's 440-yard run with a time of 46.6 seconds. India
participated in at least 12 athletics events in these games.
When Milkha Singh took to the track in Cardiff most people had
never heard of him. But he was to make history there and is now hailed as one
of India's greatest athletes.
Such tapes, video reels capture moments, emotions, victories and
cries. One ought to be amazed, thankful to technology and the minds behind it
for making it possible to capture such seconds which otherwise would have just
faded away with time.
